Description: The Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) was established in July 2004 under the aegis of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to ensure that the education programmes of medicine and other health professions offered by institutions in participating countries are recognised nationally and regionally to be of international standard.CARICOM is a political and economic affiliation of 15 member countries all of which are signatory to the Agreement Establishing the CAAM-HP.

Medical education in the Anglophone Caribbean started in 1948 at the then University College of the West Indies (UCWI) with accreditation being provided by the General Medical Council of the UK up to the end of the 1990s. However, since the mid-1970s onwards the region has witnessed an influx of ‘offshore’ medical schools with an almost exclusively international student population mainly from the US and Canada with no recognised system of accreditation prior to the establishment of CAAM-HP.

In response to these developments and the regional thrust to ensure quality education and training in the context of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), a regional accreditation system was established as a means of providing the assurance of quality that generates confidence in the stakeholders.

There have been many developments over the past fifteen years, including a growing number of schools seeking accreditation especially in the light of the ECFMG’s 2023 deadline for international graduates to have graduated from a programme which has been ‘appropriately’ accredited in order to qualify for ECFMG’s certification.

Presenter bio: Mrs Lorna Parkins has been the Executive Director of the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) since its establishment in 2004. Prior to her appointment to the CAAM-HP, Mrs Parkins was employed to the University of the West Indies, Mona, from August 1989 to July 2004, where she served as the Senior Programme Officer in the Office of Planning and Development and also in the Office of Administration and Special Initiatives in the Vice Chancellery, 1999-2004. While in the Office of Administration and Special Initiatives, Mrs Parkins was directly involved with the Steering Committee mandated to undertake the establishment up of CAAM-HP. During her tenure at the university, she was promoted to the rank of professor. Mrs Parkins obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and History and a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from the University of the West Indies, Mona. She also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Technical and Specialised Translation from the former Polytechnic of Central London, now the University of Westminster.

Not everyone who works with international students gets the training needed. Even if you don’t evaluate foreign transcripts, there’s a whole new world of terminology and concepts that can cause confusion with your international students and international student applicants. The webinar will introduce you to common terminology when working with international students and a basic understanding of the different types of credentials used around the world and why it’s important to use the appropriate terms for different countries and levels of study.

This webinar is aimed at new evaluators as well as those support staff and other professionals who don’t conduct the evaluations but still communicate with international students or examine international student documents. This webinar is open to employees and staff at educational institutions, law firms and immigration offices, military recruiters, human resources, translators, evaluation companies, school boards, and others who work with international students and staff and their educational records. This webinar is not intended for students or graduates who need their educational records evaluated.
